Gentle Folk Onkaparinga Hills Sangiovese 2024

From the boniest, highest block of the Turnbull Family Vineyard in Charleston, these 27-year-old vines are farmed with incredible care, and it shows in the glass. This is only the second release from the site, and it’s a beauty. Compared with the cooler 2023 vintage, the 2024 shows a little more meatiness and red fruit, while still carrying the lifted aromatics, spice and fine tannins that make this variety so exciting in the Hills.

The fruit was fully destemmed and fermented in open vats for three weeks before being sealed for an extended maceration. Only the free-run juice was taken, aged for 10 months in terracotta and French oak (including one new barrel), then bottled unfined and unfiltered. With just 1,995 bottles produced at 13.5% alcohol, this is a vibrant, textural and perfumed red that highlights both the vineyard’s character and the potential of the variety in Charleston.
