Laherte Freres Coteaux Champenois Les Vinages 2018

Laherte Freres Coteaux Champenois Les Vinages 2018

This Domaine is no stranger to producing still red Champagne. Aurélien Laherte's father often produced a still Pinot Meunier from Les Baudiers in Chavot, and Aurélien himself made this style in both 2009 and 2012. With the potential to fully ripen his red harvest in 2018, Laherte produced two small-batch Coteaux Champenois: the Pinot Meunier offered here, and a Pinot Noir from Les Rouges Maison, the site in Chavot which also supplies Laherte's Les Empreintes cuvée (to be released next year). This release comes from Les Vinages, a parcel of old-vine Meunier rooted in clay over limestone and sited just next to the Church of Saint-Martin of Chavot-Courcourt.

The 2018 was naturally vinified and raised in five-year-old oak for 20 months and bottled without filtration (Laherte used very little sulphur here--less than 30mg/L total). The result is a beautifully aromatic and expressive red Meunier of great energy, with sweet and fresh red fruits and a host of floral and spice notes. There's mouth-watering sapidity derived from the chalky soils. We asked Aurelian what we should pair this with: he suggested pork tenderloin, paté en croute or roast poultry. Bon appétit! The wine is bottled in a Champagne bottle, with a traditional metal clamp keeping the cork in place.
